Many monitoring tasks need a small amount of logic: switch on a fan when the temperature rises, send an alarm when a door stays open, stop a pump when the level is too low. A PLC can do this, but it needs programming software and someone who maintains the program. ICP DAS WISE modules run IF-THEN rules that are configured in a web browser instead. This article explains how the rule engine works, shows a worked example, covers data logging and notifications, and describes where the limits are compared with a PLC.
Every WISE module has a built-in web interface. You open it in a browser, define the rules on web pages and save them to the module, where they are executed. No programming tool or extra software is needed. Each rule has three parts:
Besides the I/O channels, the rules can use timers, internal registers and recipe operations, and schedules let rules act at set times. The edge controllers also provide mathematical operations. Modules can send CGI commands to IP cameras and other network devices, so a rule can trigger an action in another device.
A WISE-7526M monitors a small technical room. It has 6 analog inputs, 2 digital inputs, 2 digital outputs and 2 analog outputs, and it is powered over PoE. The signals are wired as follows: AI0 room temperature (4 to 20 mA transmitter), AI1 humidity, DI0 door contact, DI1 UPS alarm contact, DO0 extra cooling fan, DO1 warning beacon. Limits are shown in °C for readability; enter them as the input values that match the transmitter range.
| Rule | IF | THEN | ELSE |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | AI0 above 28 °C | DO0 on (fan) | |
| 2 | AI0 below 26 °C | DO0 off | |
| 3 | AI0 above 35 °C | DO1 on (beacon) | DO1 off |
| 4 | AI0 above 35 °C | Email "over temperature" | |
| 5 | DI0 open | Start timer T1 (5 min) | Reset T1 |
| 6 | Timer T1 expired | Email "door left open" | |
| 7 | DI1 active | Start timer T2 (60 s) | Reset T2 |
| 8 | Timer T2 expired | Email "UPS alarm" |
Rules 1 and 2 use two thresholds, so the fan does not switch on and off around a single value. Rules 5 to 8 use timers as delays, so a door opened briefly for maintenance or a short UPS event does not cause an email. Test how the module behaves while a condition stays true, so a persistent alarm does not flood the mailbox. Meanwhile the module publishes its values over MQTT to a central broker for a dashboard.
One practical point: WISE-7100 and WISE-75xxM I/O modules send email without SSL. Many mail services only accept encrypted connections, so plan for a local mail relay, or use a WISE edge controller, which supports SSL email.
The WISE I/O modules (WISE-7100 and WISE-75xxM) do not list a data logger. They make their values available over Modbus TCP, and the WISE-75xxM models also over MQTT, so a SCADA system or broker records the history.
WISE-5800 adds a data logger with microSD card. It records I/O values by event or at regular intervals and sends the files by email or FTP. It reads I-7000 remote I/O modules or Modbus RTU devices.
The edge controllers WISE-5231M, WISE-2241M and WISE-2841M support an unlimited number of rules, timers, schedules and data logger sets, with a built-in 32 GB microSD card. They read XV-board I/O, RS-485 modules and Modbus TCP devices, and push data actively by MQTT publish, Modbus TCP or SNMP trap. Notifications include SSL email, SMS on the 4G models and messaging apps such as Telegram on WISE-2841M. All WISE edge controllers work with IoTstar for central monitoring and remote maintenance.

Examples: WISE-7144 (8 DI, 8 DO), WISE-7105 (8 thermistor inputs, 4 DO), WISE-7526M and WISE-7555M (MQTT). WISE-5231M-4GE and WISE-2841M-4GE have a built-in 4G modem for EMEA frequency bands.
When the limits are reached, ICP DAS Win-GRAF PACs run IEC 61131-3 programs, and the UA series communication servers include a PID function. For networks with stricter security requirements, ETS-7200 Ethernet I/O such as ETS-7255 also offers IF-THEN-ELSE logic together with HTTPS and MQTT with optional TLS.

AR-200 CR is a dynamic signal acquisition module for vibration monitoring and analysis. It accepts two IEPE accelerometers, each supplied with a built-in 3 mA excitation current, and digitises the signals with a 16-bit converter. Sampling of both channels runs simultaneously, at rates up to 200 kHz per channel.Recordings are written to a Micro SD card, so data can be taken away and analysed offline. Capture can be started by a push button, a schedule, an analog threshold, a digital input or a remote command from the supplied utility on a host PC, which also lets you set the sampling rate and scheduling for each application. A single relay output and one digital input add basic event handling to the unit. The logger suits panel or machine installations that need to run unattended. It works from a wide +10 to +30 VDC supply, operates from -25 to +75 °C, and provides 4 kV contact ESD protection on all terminals. Mounting is by wall or DIN-rail.ApplicationsVibration monitoring and analysisIndustrial automationFactory automationProcess automation
The AR-400 is a dynamic signal acquisition module for vibration monitoring and analysis. It samples four channels simultaneously with 16-bit resolution and supplies a built-in 3 mA excitation current for IEPE accelerometers, so compatible sensors can be connected directly without an external supply.Acquired data is written to a micro SDHC card (4 to 32 GB), allowing offline analysis after capture. Recording can be started by push button, schedule, analog threshold, digital input or remote trigger from the utility software installed on a host PC, which also handles sample rate and sampling schedule settings.Suited to condition monitoring setups where vibration data must be captured at defined times or on defined events.Includes a relay output (Form A, 5A@250 VAC) and a digital input for use within trigger or control logic.ApplicationsVibration monitoring and analysisIndustrial automationFactory automationProcess automation
CL-202-E CR is a data logger module for monitoring indoor air quality and climate conditions. It measures CO2 with a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor, alongside temperature, relative humidity and dew point, and records the results with date and time stamps for later analysis. The module offers an RS-485 port and an Ethernet port with PoE support, so it can be integrated into existing HMI or SCADA systems over DCON, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP or MQTT. Real-time readings can be viewed from the iAir Utility, the iOS or Android apps, or a web browser, provided the logger is on the same local network. Logged data can be exported to CSV for analysis in standard spreadsheet or industry software.Relay output for alarm signalling or control of IAQ equipmentCeiling or wall mounting, IP20 housing, Ø 150 x 53 mmOperating temperature 0 ~ 50°C, non-condensing humidity range 10 ~ 90% RHApplicationsTransportation of food or pharmaceuticalsFood and beverage industry (HACCP)Blood stations and pharmaciesBuilding and energy managementWarehouse managementMuseums, archives and galleriesIndoor or underground parking lot air quality monitoring
DL-100TM485S is a black-cover, IP66 remote data logger for monitoring temperature and relative humidity over a -20 to +60 °C and 0 to 100% RH measurement range. Readings are stored internally, shown on an LCD and made available over RS-485 using Modbus RTU, so the module can feed a supervisory system or be read on site. This non-P version has a typical accuracy of ±0.4 °C and ±3% RH between 20 and 80% RH. Logging intervals run from 10 seconds to 1 day, and when storage is full the module can either overwrite older records or stop logging, as configured.Configuration, retrieval and charting are handled with the DL Utility, which can export data to Excel. The unit runs from 10 to 30 VDC, mounts on a DIN-rail or wall, and is rated IP66 for harsh or washdown environments.ApplicationsTransportation of food or pharmaceuticalsFood and beverage industry (HACCP)Blood stations and pharmaciesBuilding and energy managementWarehousesMuseums, archives and galleries
