Temperature is the most common measurement in a building, from water circuits to duct, room and outdoor air. Choosing temperature sensors for building automation is mostly a choice between Pt100 and Pt1000 resistance thermometers, NTC thermistors and transmitters with a 0–10 V or 4–20 mA output. That choice decides which input module you need, how far the sensor can be from it and how accurate the reading will be. Below we compare the options, calculate the effect of cable resistance and list which ICP DAS input modules read each sensor type.
Platinum resistance thermometers (RTDs) follow a standard curve defined in IEC 60751. A Pt100 has 100 Ω at 0 °C and a Pt1000 has 1000 Ω. With the standard coefficient, resistance rises by about 0.385 Ω per kelvin for a Pt100 and 3.85 Ω per kelvin for a Pt1000. Sensors from different manufacturers are interchangeable within their tolerance class, which makes RTDs the usual choice for water circuits and energy calculations.
The resistance of an NTC thermistor falls as temperature rises, and the change per kelvin is large, so lead resistance hardly matters. The curve is non-linear and differs between types: a 10 kΩ NTC from one manufacturer does not necessarily match a 10 kΩ NTC from another. The input module must use the exact curve, or readings can be several degrees off at the ends of the range.
A transmitter combines a sensor element with electronics that convert temperature into a standard signal over a fixed range, for example 0–50 °C. It needs a supply, usually 24 V, but any analog input can read it. Voltage signals are sensitive to voltage drop and interference on long cables. A 4–20 mA loop is more robust over distance, and a current below 4 mA shows a broken wire.
With a 2-wire connection the input measures the sensor plus the resistance of both conductors. A 3-wire connection adds a third conductor so that the module can measure the lead resistance and subtract it, assuming equal conductors. A 4-wire connection separates the measuring current from the voltage sensing and removes the lead resistance almost completely.
Worked example: a copper conductor of 0.5 mm² has about 0.035 Ω per metre at 20 °C. In a 2-wire circuit both conductors add to the reading:
| Cable length (one way) | Loop resistance | Error with Pt100 | Error with Pt1000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 m | 0.7 Ω | +1.8 K | +0.18 K |
| 25 m | 1.75 Ω | +4.5 K | +0.45 K |
| 50 m | 3.5 Ω | +9.1 K | +0.91 K |
A 2-wire Pt100 is therefore only acceptable with very short leads. A 2-wire Pt1000 is often good enough for room and duct sensors. For long runs, and for water temperatures that feed energy calculations, use 3-wire or 4-wire connections. Lead resistance also varies with cable temperature, so a fixed offset correction is never exact.
The total error is the sum of the sensor tolerance, the wiring effect and the input module. IEC 60751 class B allows ±(0.3 + 0.005·|t|) °C, which is ±0.4 °C at 20 °C, and class A allows ±(0.15 + 0.002·|t|) °C. Input module accuracy is usually stated as a percentage of the full-scale range (FSR), so convert it using the temperature span of the selected input type. Use twisted, shielded cable, keep sensor cables away from mains and motor cables, and earth the shield at one end only.
| Sensor | Typical use in buildings | Cable length | Interchangeable | Needs supply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pt100 | Water circuits, plant rooms | Short in 2-wire, long in 3- or 4-wire | Yes, within tolerance class | No |
| Pt1000 | Room, duct, outdoor, pipes | Medium in 2-wire, long in 3-wire | Yes, within tolerance class | No |
| NTC thermistor | Room units, HVAC equipment | Long, little lead effect | Only with the same curve | No |
| 0–10 V / 4–20 mA | Transmitters, mixed signal lists | Long with 4–20 mA | Yes, by range | Yes |
If the BMS uses BACnet/IP, the BNET-2310M reads 0–10 V transmitters directly on its ±10 V analog inputs. If a controller only has voltage or current inputs, the SG-3013-G signal conditioner converts one Pt100, Pt1000 or Ni120 sensor into 0–10 V or 4–20 mA. For room climate, the DL-10 reports temperature (typically ±0.4 °C), humidity and dew point over Modbus RTU.

The PET-7017-10 is a PoE-powered Ethernet analog input module for engineers who need voltage or current measurement on a networked I/O node. Its inputs can be set as 10 differential or 20 single-ended channels in software, and each channel can be given its own range, so one module can serve mixed sensor types on the same network. Each channel offers a choice of voltage ranges from ±150 mV to ±10 V and current ranges of ±20 mA, 0 ~ 20 mA and 4 ~ 20 mA, selected with jumpers. Resolution is 16-bit, and the module has two sampling modes: normal mode at 10 Hz total and fast mode at 50 Hz total. Open wire detection is available for 4 ~ 20 mA inputs, and differential channels are rated for 240 Vrms overvoltage protection.Configuration and monitoring are handled through a built-in web server with Web HMI, and the module supports Modbus TCP and Modbus UDP. Access is controlled by ID, password and IP filter. The unit is powered either from PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Class 1) or from a +12 ~ +48 VDC terminal block, and it mounts on a DIN rail.ApplicationsBuilding automationFactory automationMachine automationRemote maintenanceRemote diagnosisTesting equipment
AR-200 CR is a dynamic signal acquisition module for vibration monitoring and analysis. It accepts two IEPE accelerometers, each supplied with a built-in 3 mA excitation current, and digitises the signals with a 16-bit converter. Sampling of both channels runs simultaneously, at rates up to 200 kHz per channel.Recordings are written to a Micro SD card, so data can be taken away and analysed offline. Capture can be started by a push button, a schedule, an analog threshold, a digital input or a remote command from the supplied utility on a host PC, which also lets you set the sampling rate and scheduling for each application. A single relay output and one digital input add basic event handling to the unit. The logger suits panel or machine installations that need to run unattended. It works from a wide +10 to +30 VDC supply, operates from -25 to +75 °C, and provides 4 kV contact ESD protection on all terminals. Mounting is by wall or DIN-rail.ApplicationsVibration monitoring and analysisIndustrial automationFactory automationProcess automation
