Many electricity contracts for commercial and industrial sites include a charge based on the highest demand in the billing period, or a contracted capacity that should not be exceeded. The peak is often caused by a short overlap of loads that could have waited a few minutes, such as water heaters, ventilation or EV chargers. Limiting peak demand means detecting that overlap in time and switching some of those loads off for a while. This article explains how demand is measured and how to build staged load shedding with the IF-THEN-ELSE logic on an ICP DAS power meter concentrator, with a worked example.
Instantaneous power changes from second to second. Demand is the average power over a fixed integration period, often 15 minutes; the exact period and the way it is billed are set by the supply contract or the grid operator. Peak demand is the highest of these averages in the billing period. Two consequences matter for control:
Load shedding mainly moves consumption in time. Choose loads that can be interrupted for some minutes without harming the process, product quality or comfort.
The ICP DAS PMC and PMD series power meter concentrators have a built-in IF-THEN-ELSE logic engine for power demand management. Rules are edited on web pages without programming, and the specifications list an unlimited number of rules, timers and schedules, plus internal registers (70 on the PMC-5231). The concentrator reads the power meters and adjusts device operation according to the power status through Modbus I/O modules, which is how load shedding is carried out. Alarms can be sent by email, and on the IIoT models also by LINE or Telegram.
Which values can serve as rule conditions, and how demand is calculated, depends on model and firmware; check the user manual before fixing the design.
These relays switch contactor coils or enable inputs, not the load itself. Wiring them into a distribution board is work for a qualified electrician.
A building has a target maximum demand of 250 kW. All figures here are example values; use your own contract and load data. A PM-3133-RCT500P meter on the main incomer is read by a PMC-5231 over RS-485. An M-7061 relay module on the same RS-485 line drives contactors or enable inputs for three sheddable loads.
| Stage | Load | Power | Max. off-time | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Storage water heaters | 36 kW | 30 min | Relay 1 |
| 2 | Ventilation, high-speed stage | 20 kW | 15 min | Relay 2 |
| 3 | EV chargers, enable input | 44 kW | 20 min | Relay 3 |
The rules in plain form (the web configuration looks different):
IF total kW > 225 for 60 s THEN send email "demand warning"IF total kW > 235 for 60 s THEN relay 1 OFFIF total kW > 245 for 60 s THEN relay 2 OFFIF total kW > 250 for 30 s THEN relay 3 OFFIF total kW < 190 for 5 min THEN restore the last relay switched offIF relay n OFF longer than its max. off-time THEN relay n ONThe delays and off-time limits can be implemented with the timer function. The delay stops motor starts and other short spikes, which hardly affect a 15-minute average, from triggering a shed. Test the rules outside working hours with lowered thresholds, and check in the logged data that each stage switches off and restores as intended.
Send technical sales your demand limit, a load profile and a list of loads that can be interrupted, and we will help you plan meters, concentrator and outputs.
The CA-SCT16I-100A-L080 is a split-core current transformer for measuring AC current on existing conductors. Its split design lets it be clamped around a cable without disconnecting the circuit, which suits retrofit energy monitoring. It provides one channel with a 100A rating and a Φ16mm aperture. This variant is intended for use with the iWSN and iXN series. The 8 m wire gives room to route the sensor from the conductor to the measuring device. The source data states a maximum input voltage of 500 VAC at 50/60 Hz.Accuracy is specified as 1% for the CT alone. When used with iWSN-1110X, iWSN-1131P, iWSN-750P or iWSN-757P, the stated accuracy is ±3% or ±0.3 A. The unit is RoHS and WEEE certified.ApplicationsCurrent measurement for power metering with iWSN and iXN series systemsRetrofit energy monitoring on existing conductors
The CA-SCT24I-200A-L080 is a single-channel split-core current transformer rated at 200A, with a Φ24mm aperture. Its split-core construction lets it be fitted around an existing conductor, which suits retrofit metering work where the circuit cannot easily be disconnected.Supplied with an 8 m lead, this CT is intended for use with the iWSN and iXN series. The maximum input voltage is 500VAC at 50/60Hz. Accuracy is rated at 1% for the CT alone, and at ±3% or ±0.3A when used with the iWSN-1110X, iWSN-1131P, iWSN-750P and iWSN-757P.Choose this variant when you need a 200A-rated CT with a Φ24mm aperture and an 8 m lead for iWSN or iXN metering installations.ApplicationsEnergy managementPower meteringCurrent monitoring on iWSN and iXN series installations
The CA-SCT36I-400A-L080 is a single-channel split-core current transformer for energy management and power metering. Its Φ36mm opening takes conductors up to a 400A rating, and the split core fits around an existing cable without disconnecting the circuit. This variant is specified for use with the iWSN and iXN series. The 8 m wire gives room to route the sensor from the conductor to the measuring device. Accuracy is 0.5% for the CT alone, and the source lists a combined accuracy of +-3% or +-0.3A when used with iWSN-1110X, iWSN-1131P, iWSN-750P and iWSN-757P.Single-channel split-core CT for retrofit installation400A rating through a Φ36mm apertureMaximum input voltage 500VAC, 50/60HzApplicationsEnergy managementPower metering with iWSN and iXN series devices
The e-USB404 CR adds four independent USB 3.1 Gen 1 host controllers to an AXP-9000-IoT Programmable Automation Controller through a single e-Bus x4 slot. It suits engineers who need several USB devices running at the same time, particularly USB vision cameras that generate large volumes of image data. Each port has its own controller and an LED status indicator, and all four Type-A connectors are accessible on the panel for straightforward wiring. Each port supplies 5 V at up to 900 mA, with overload and short-circuit protection. Power to each port can be switched on and off in software through the SDK, which allows a hung USB device to be reset for failure recovery.Transfer modes: SuperSpeed (5 Gbps), High Speed (480 Mbps), Full Speed (12 Mbps) and Low Speed (1.5 Mbps)Supported on Microsoft Windows 7/8.1/10 and LinuxOperating temperature -25 ~ +60 °CTypical uses are frame grabbing in machine vision inspection, automated optical inspection, quality assurance and medical imaging.ApplicationsMachine vision inspectionAutomated optical inspectionQuality assuranceMedical imaging
