The VEX-144 CR adds four RS-422/485 serial ports to a PC through a PCI Express x1 slot. Each port can be set to RS-485 for half-duplex or RS-422 for full-duplex communication, with speeds from 50 to 115200 bps, making it suited to adding serial devices to a host without spare COM ports.
COM port numbers can be assigned manually using the 8-bit DIP switch COM-Selector, or left to the driver to pick an available number automatically. Under Windows the driver provides up to 128 KB of software buffer per COM port, which helps with large file transfers. Each port also has a 128-byte hardware FIFO.
This is the standard, non-i version, so photocoupler data line isolation and ESD protection are not included. Where those features are required, the i versions of the VEX-144 series provide them. The card is a short design and ships with one CA-4002 connector.
