The I-2533CS-A is a local CAN bridge that links a CAN bus segment to a single-mode fibre link, so two CAN networks can be connected over long distances. It converts the electrical CAN signal to optical transmission, and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) lets bidirectional CAN traffic run over one fibre core, reducing the cost of cabling.
The bridge is supplied as one half of a matched pair and must be used with the I-2533CS-B at the far end. The maximum transmission distance of 15 km is stated to apply at any CAN baud rate, and the two networks can run at different baud rates. A bus error on one network does not affect the other, which helps keep faults contained.
The CAN side is electrically isolated at 2500 Vrms and supports CAN 2.0A and CAN 2.0B to ISO 11898-2. Configuration is handled by a rotary switch for standard baud rates, a user-defined baud rate option, a built-in 120 Ω terminating resistor switch and a utility tool for CAN message filtering over RS-232.
